JAWSEL is aimed at facilitating cross-disciplinary discussion on matters relating to animal welfare, animal ethics, forensics and animal law, in keeping with the aims of AWSELVA. It is not restricted to veterinary audiences.
TYPES OF ARTICLE
Original research papers may be theoretical or based on field or laboratory studies. Original papers should be up to 5,000 words (excluding references).
Reviews address fundamental issues relating to animal welfare, animal ethics or animal law and provide new insights. Reviews should be up to 6,000 words (excluding references).
Essays address fundamental issues relating to animal welfare, animal ethics, forensics or animal law and provide new insights, allowing authors to express personal opinions (e.g. to provide personal ethical viewpoints or suggest developments of the field). Essays should be up to 6,000 words (excluding references).
Letters provide a short comment or response to previous papers or letters. Letters should usually be no more than 700 words, although longer articles may be considered as other article types.
ETHICS IN PUBLISHING
Submission will be taken as representing that:
Authors will honour any reasonable request for materials, methods or data needed to verify or replicate experiments reported in the journal.
The work is original and has not been published elsewhere, other than cited information or where papers develop ideas or present data that have formed part of presentation proceedings or a published abstract.
Animal research adheres to the ASAB/ABS Guidelines for the Use of Animals in Research and the ARRIVE guidelines.
Publication is approved by all authors.
The author has obtained written permission from the copyright owners and credits the source(s) for any excerpts from other copyrighted works.
Authors are free from conflicts of interest and should disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest that could inappropriately influence, or be perceived to influence, their work, including financial support for the work.
Upon publication the copyright of the article rests with AWSELVA. The author may re-use content for appropriate academic usage.

Manuscripts should be written in British English.
Please submit your manuscript as a single Word file.
You may use any appropriate format of referencing, so as long as the style is consistent.
There are no strict formatting requirements but all manuscripts should include clearly defined sections.
All papers should include an abstract of up to 150 words.
Photos and figures may be included, ensure photos are minimum 300 d.p.i. and include a legend and number cross-referenced in the text.

Hard copies are not required.
Resubmitted manuscripts should be accompanied by a detailed explanation of how the author has dealt with all of the reviewers'/editor's comments.
Authors may suggest three potential referees, with email addresses.

REFERRING AND PROOFING
All papers are refereed. JAWSEL is proud to have a double blind peer review process.
Reviewers may waive anonymity if they wish, but authors may not.
Page proofs in PDF format will be sent by e-mail to the corresponding author, whose acceptance will be assumed unless we are informed otherwise.
We do not provide offprints, but we can provide a pdf version for modest circulation for teaching purposes.
